College is usually associated with cramming for tests and a homework overload, but UTC now has a major that will allow students to trade sitting in a classroom for white water rafting or scuba diving. The outdoor recreation major came to UTC in August 2006, headed by Ron Nelson, director of campus recreation, who does most of the academic instruction for the major.
There are three different concentrations to choose from: aquatics, paddling or outdoor adventure.
Although the outdoor recreation major offers a hands-on learning experience, there is no way to escape all classroom time. There is a large academic portion to go along with the hands-on activities.
According to Nelson, the academic side of the major focuses on the philosophy and history of outdoor recreation, the socioeconomic value of the program and theories on administration.
It is also required that each outdoor recreation major get a minor in business.
Nelson said students who graduate with a degree in outdoor recreation have a variety of career options available to them.
"Almost every college hires people with degrees in outdoor recreation," he said.
Nelson said private companies, equipment marketing, retail sales, recreation departments and various clubs also have a great desire for these graduates.
Still not ready to take the plunge and change your major from accounting to outdoor recreation?
You can participate in the activities and trips without majoring in outdoor recreation. Though some events are required for majors, they are open to all UTC students.
Miles Ledford, coordinator of outdoor programs and club sports, said, "We take trips three weekends per month and they are available for all students, faculty, and staff."
There are also weekly programs like mountain biking and kayaking.
"In this society, we've got all the stuff that we need," Nelson said. "So now people are looking for thrills like white water rafting, bungee jumping, skiing, and sky diving.
