The Chattanooga Mocs golf team (no.12) claimed their second title in a week at the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm in Rocky Face, Ga., Sunday. The Mocs took to the field against eight top 20 schools, including no. 1 Georgia, no. 6 Florida, no. 7 Clemson and no. 10 Georgia Tech.
The Chattanooga Mocs were tied fourth place at the end of the first round, shooting a three over-par 291.
Freshman Stephan Jaegar, Munich, Germany, led the team with a two-under par 70, followed by teammate Jonathan Hodge, Jefferson City, Tenn., with a 71.
"Stephan played extremely well today," Head Coach Mark Guhne said, according to gomocs.com. "It is not often you see a freshman step up like this."
Then the Mocs took the lead after 36 holes, shooting a tournament low of five-under par 283.
Ben Rickett, Surrey, England, posted a three-under par round of 69, claiming five birdies and two bogeys, to tie for 12th.
Jaegar posted a one-under par 71 to tie for second and Hodge followed in eighth with an even-par 72.
Chattanooga started the second round with a three-stroke lead; however, lost their lead early on.
However, Jaegar hit an impressive 243-yard hole-in-one with a three iron to get the game back on track.
"We needed something big there and that did it," Guhne said, according to gomocs.com. "It recharged us and got the juices going."
Hodge finished the day with a team-low round of two-under par 70 after starting out with a slow two-over par.
The Mocs finished with an even par 864, topping Tennessee by five strokes. No. 13 South Carolina finished third, followed by no. 7 Clemson, no. 6 Florida, no. 20 Alabama and no. 1 Georgia.
"I wish I knew the right words to express how I feel right now," Guhne said, according to gomocs.com. "This is a very special event to me, one I targeted as an event we needed to elevate our program, to just be a part of when I took over four years ago.
"To win, it amazes me. Other than the NCAA, there is no college event I'd rather win," he said.
Jaegar finished two-under par 214 to tie for fourth, while Hodge took second at 213 with rounds of 71, 72 and 70. Jaegar finished the final round with his first over-par score of 73 in his collegiate career.
Rickett finished with round scores of 75, 69 and 74, notching a two-over par 218 to tie for 20th.
Fredril Qvicker, junior from Stockholm, Sweden, tied for 40th at 222 and Derek Rende, junior from Soddy Daisy, Tenn., tied for 56th at 225.
The Mocs golf team returns to action at the PING Preview at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, Sept. 28-30. The preview will be held on the same course as the national championship in May.
