The University's degree audit program will be switching from the CAPP sheets to MyMocsDegree for students in the catalog years 2008 and up.

The change will take place in fall 2012 with seminars this spring for instruction offered to both students and faculty as well as an online tutorial, Linda Orth, University registrar, said.

The change in the system is due to many complaints by both faculty and staff about the CAPP sheets, Orth said.

"There was huge confusion that CAPP wasn't working properly," Orth said.

"What wasn't working was all of the substitutions. It was hard to change all of those substitutions because each had to be changed for the individual student."

"It was cumbersome to print, difficult to read and difficult to understand. Is [the requirement] satisfied? Is it not satisfied? The and/or statements, those were confusing," Orth said.

She said CAPP was not a product that worked best for UTC, and she said she thinks the new program, MyMocsDegree, will have much better output.

The new MyMocsDegree system will be an improved version of the CAPP sheets.

"The main difference is the output," Orth said. "It's less confusing, easier to read and presented in a more logical fashion student view: what I've taken, what I need to take."

Orth said the new system will have a registration view for what students have already registered for and a graduation view showing students what requirements are satisfied and what requirments still remain unfulfilled.

The University expects this to be a simple transition for all.

"Students are really tech- savvy.  I think they'll figure it out pretty quickly," said Orth, said. "We'll have a powerpoint and several information sessions to learn how to view, log in and read it. We're also having faculty sessions and working on those right now along with a powerpoint in MyMocsNet. We're working on development training right now and also have a FAQ right in MyMocsDegree. There's also a help button in the new program."

The faculty and student sessions are expected to take place in late February and early March, and all students are encouraged to attend these sessions. However, if they are unable to, there will be an instructional powerpoint available on the UTC website, Orth said.

Students who had troubles with CAPP in the past said they are excited to hear the University will be changing the system in the fall.

"I'm really excited about this new system. It could be potentially helpful to students trying to graduate on time," Claire Simpson,  a Clarksville, Tenn., senior, said.

She said because of Banner she was unable to know exactly what classes she needed to take in order to graduate on time. "Sometimes the CAPP sheets don't show students the classes they're missing exactly. Right now, the CAPP sheet only told me that I was missing one class instead of two in order to graduate. However, due to this minor setback, I will be attending another semester at UTC."

Orth said the confusion students experienced with CAPP is expected to be resolved once the transition to MyMocsDegree is complete.
