Mahatma Gandhi once said "be the change you want to see in the world." That mentality is what led the Student Government Association to pass a resolution Tuesday that called for a $5 increase in the student activity fee.
GASP! Now wait a minute before you go off writing a letter to the editor.
Please read the details that explain how only $5 can make our "dream" campus occur by as early as next year.
The resolution is contingent upon the allocation of $2 going toward club sports, $2.50 going toward entertainment programming, and $0.50 going toward Greek life. We feel that this would help bring in thousands of dollars to entities on our campus that deserve additional funding that they have not received or have received very little of in the past.
Traditionally, when students hear about increases in tuition or fees, it is usually a large three-digit number that has people fretting over financial issues. We took that and many other thoughts into consideration and found that $5 could barely be considered an increase in comparison to past increases and would still be affordable for everyone.
Looking at the big picture, the SGA wanted to take steps towards achieving what students want on our campus. We have begun an effort with this increase to show the administration and even state officials what students want. We feel that these additional funds will transform our campus dramatically next year and will allow students to dream beyond what we've ever dreamt.
We are going to stand up for the change we want to see on our campus and hope you will join us in the effort.
Our administrators do listen and this minor fee increase will still speak volumes to the direction and climate students want to have here at UTC.
If you have any questions or comments feel free to voice them however you choose and if you would like to contact me directly, go for it at William-Staley@utc.edu.
There is nothing shady about this; I believe I've explained it as plainly as possible. This resolution will be sent to the UT System Board of Trustees in June. Upon approval, this fee could be increased as early as Fall 2008.
