The Adult Scholars Program is a peer and merit-based organization for adult students age 25 and older, with a 3.2 cumulative GPA and at least 12 semester hours at UTC.

Located in Room 278 in the UC, the adult services staff provides a wide variety of assistance.

Margaret Daniel, director of adult services and advisor of the Adult Scholars Program, said:,"We offer free tutoring to our members, and for the benefit of students who work 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., our offices are open later in the evening.

"The primary purposes of this organization are to provide peer support to fellow adult students at UTC, to foster an atmosphere of goodwill and academic excellence among adult students and to provide recognition for achieving adult students," Daniel said. "The Adult Scholars raise funds to award two $600 scholarships to deserving non- traditional students each year, sponsor work shops and seminars on campus and engage in community activities and social events."

Dan Cheon is president of Adult Scholars and has been a member for two years.

"A lot of adult students are back at college for the second time," Cheon said. "In such cases it's especially hard to make the adjustment since the first semester back can be a shock, and it's good to have peers to commiserate and study with," he said. "Officers of adult scholars are willing to do that.

"I've learned from professors that most adult students tend to do much better academically because they are more serious about school and realize they're paying for it out of pocket. They're there to learn, we're here to help."

"One of the aspects of adult scholars that makes it unique is the fact that the membership is a one-time payment of $35," Cheon said.

"That makes us the most inexpensive merit-based organization on campus," he said. "Also, members submit nominations throughout the year to recognize a faculty member who has done outstanding services to adult students, and award them a plaque and certificate."

Last year Ziad Keilany, head of the economics department, was recognized for the outstanding services to adult students award.

The induction ceremony will be held April 6 in Patten Chapel.

Applications for membership can be picked up at the Adult Services Office in the UC.
