Voting in the Student Government Association election begins April 12, and candidates for senate seats and official positions have started campaigning.
The officer positions consist of the president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, parliamentarian, public relations director and chief of staff. These elections are held every year in the spring semester.
The elections for district offices are in the fall and include seats from the colleges of arts and sciences, business, engineering, pre-professional/education and non-degree (undeclared).
The last day to register to campaign was March 16, and March 17 was the first day all candidates were allowed to engage in campaigning until voting ends April 4.
Bill Staley, a Hendersonville, Tenn., senior and current president of SGA said, "Run for what you have a drive and passion to do. Don't just run for the sake of having a title."
"Leaders are not the people who do all the leg work or who work themselves to death to complete a project successfully," Staley said. "Leaders are the people who inspire others to do their best to lead promising lives and encourage them to dream beyond limitations."
Jennifer Sadler, a Memphis sophomore and public relations director of SGA said, "I would hope candidates have a strong desire to effect a large number of people and create a great atmosphere for the students.
"Candidates should get themselves out there and speak to as many students as possible, send out e-mails, speak at group meetings and most of all, encourage people to vote," Sadler said.
Voting, which begins April 2 at 9 a.m. and ends April 4 at 5 p.m., is online.
Students can log on to www.utc.edu, click on the voting link and choose which college they are in which will take them to their ballot.
There are several qualifications a student running for an office in SGA must meet.
All students seeking SGA office must have and maintain a 2.0 GPA, must already be a member of SGA and must be registered for 12 hours minimally, unless the student is in their graduating semester and does not need a full 12 hours to fill the graduation requirements for their major.
All rules and regulations for candidates running for SGA can be found in the SGA Elections Publicity Guidelines packet available for any candidates running for SGA.
