It was a night of broken records for the women's basketball team as they extended their winning streak to 18 games, downing conference rival Wofford at McKenzie Arena Monday night.
The Lady Mocs, who haven't lost since Dec. 1, used one of the best performances of her career by Shanara Hollinquest to power itself to its current 23-3 record.
Hollinquest, a sophomore forward from Sylacauga, Ala., scored 23 points and picked up 11 rebounds in the contest, leading the game in both statistics. She averages 11.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.
Brooke Hand, a senior guard from Molton, Ala., made the record books that night, hoisting her 300th career three-point shot early in the first half. That shot gave her the most treys in Southern Conference history in either men's or women's basketball. She would go on to shoot 3-9 from beyond the arc, scoring nine points.
The game was controlled by Chattanooga, who used a physically dominating presence in the post to secure a 50-32 edge in rebounding, including 21 offensive rebounds which lead to 20 second chance points.
The Terriers kept the game close for most of the first half, battling to a 25-25 tie with 5:58 left in the first half. However, a jumper by Alex Anderson put the Lady Mocs on top soon thereafter, and UTC never looked back, ending the half up 45-30.
Wofford would not threaten the Lady Mocs' lead in the second half, as the front-runner in the SoCon held off the Terriers for a final score of 85-63.
Hollinquest, who went 10-15 from the floor, picked up the slack for Alex Anderson, the usual main producer of the team.
Anderson, a senior from Stone Mountain, Ga., was keyed in on by Wofford defenders as she scored twelve points, going 5-15 from the field.
Sophomore Jenaya Wade-Frey, a guard from Madison, Ala., was the only other Lady Moc to score in double digits, scoring 13 including two three-point shots.
Wofford, who moved to 9-16 after the loss, has a streak of their own, but it is not positive. They are now the loser of 12 straight games since Jan. 7.
While the Lady Mocs certainly are anticipating the SoCon championships March 6-10, they are not out of clearing yet. The women's basketball team has three more games to go, all of which are conference matchups.
The Lady Mocs next face the College of Charleston, who will face UTC this Saturday in Charleston, starting at 2 p.m.
Georgia Southern and Western Carolina are the last opponents Chattanooga will face this season. The teams rank third and second in the SoCon, respectively, and have winning records against conference opponents this season.
UTC competes against Georgia Southern on Monday and the game against Western Carolina will be at home next Thursday and will be the last game of the regular season.
