With midterms approaching, UTC offers several tutoring services to help struggling students prepare for exams.
Some specific services being offered for 100-200 level courses include: physics, chemistry, biology, general science, math, developmental math (105 to 200), statistics, sociology, psychology and human services.
Margaret Daniel, director of adult services, said tutoring is beneficial in helping students to pass courses.
"The students tell us that it really makes a difference," Daniel said. "I would strongly urge students to get help early on."
Daniel said the tutors are outstanding students with high GPAs, who are recommended by academic departments.
According to Daniel, there have been a large number of students taking advantage of these services.
Stephanie Wimberley is a Dayton, Tenn., senior who tutors at UTC.
"We try to discourage our tutorees from waiting for the last minute," Wimberley said.
Wimberley said it is best for students to come at least two weeks in advance.
She also said it is important for students to come to appointments with specific questions.
"[Students] get out of it what they put in to it," Wimberley said.
The math department also has outstanding tutoring services in the math lab, according to Kyle Croft, a Trenton, Ga., sophomore.
"I've never really been all that good at math, but with UTC's tutoring services, I am now better because students working in the math center simplify the problems and equations to where I can understand easier," Croft said.
Appointments for tutoring may be made at adult services and are on a first come, first serve basis.
Appointments can be made Monday through Friday, and tutoring services are free of charge.
