The Senate is in session: SGA Senators passed three bills at their Jan. 29 meeting. SGA convenes Tuesdays at 3 p.m. in the Raccoon Mountain Room of the UC. Meetings are open to all students.

The SGA Senate met Tuesday afternoon to discuss pressing university issues and to pass three bills to benefit students at UTC.

Of the three new bills passed by the 19-member Senate, the first bill, concerning Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity that conducts service projects at UTC, was passed unanimously by the SGA senate.

The second bill, approval of $2,070 for 500 UTC "game day" T-shirts, was also passed unanimously. According to members, all shirts will be free and handed out to the first 500 students who attend the UTC Mocs versus Davidson Wildcats game.

Senate member Katherine Cochran, a senior from Franklin, Tenn., who is also in charge of the athletics committee for SGA, was recognized by Vice President Drew Holland, a senior from Franklin, Tenn., for designing the shirt logo.

The third bill was passed to reallocate rollover funds for school programs.

Leftover funds from the prior year are put back into university program accounts, SGA President Bill Staley, a senior from Hendersonville, Tenn., said. These include campus-wide activities, student body projects, awards, club sports and speakers.

According to Staley, allocated state money from last year is reallocated into each of the separate accounts from SGA's percentage distribution in the SGA constitution.

Putting the money back into UTC's programs, rather than simply saving it is important, Staley said.

This is SGA's fourth meeting this semester.

Issues addressed included a networking weekend, approval of funding for a service fraternity and UTC place.

Staley said he will be attending the networking weekend at UT Martin for a meeting with other SGA leaders to discuss issues at other UT campuses.

Holland and Chief of Staff Cacey Lewis, a senior from Buford, Ga., said they will be joining Staley. The group said they will be leaving Thursday afternoon.

"I hope we can make it back in time for the game on Saturday," Staley said.

SGA Secretary Lauren Jeffrie, a senior from Fayetteville, Tenn., called role and spoke about the attendance records for SGA stating that every committee absence is a half-absence. If a Senate member is absent three times or has six half-absences, the final time they are dismissed from SGA. Three members' seats were empty Tuesday.

Public Relations Director for SGA Jennifer Sadler, a Memphis junior, announced the launch of a Facebook group that will feature SGA events, including a Superbowl party.
