The UTC graduate school is presenting a free workshop entitled "So, you want to go to graduate school" Jan. 31 in Fletcher Hall room 100.
One of the goals of the workshop according to Stephanie Bellar, associate dean of the graduate school, is to highlight the plethora of options available in the UTC graduate program.
Many students are not aware of the variety of graduate programs that do not require a student to have an undergraduate degree in the same field, according to Bellar.
Another important aspect of the workshop will be discussing the time line of getting accepted to graduate school, Bellar said.
There are steps involved in the registration and test taking process to be eligible for graduate school that some students may not be aware of, she said.
The workshop also plans to emphasize how to acquire financial aid and make students competitive for funding.
Presenters will reflect on how and why they choose their graduate schools to give prospective students a view of what they need to do to get ready for graduate school, Bellar said.
The staff at the graduate school is ready and willing to help students investigate the other schools they might be interested in attending, she said.
"I want students to understand that they are not committing to UTC graduate school [by attending the workshop]," Bellar said.
The workshop is intended not only for seniors who may be attending graduate school in the fall, but also for sophomores and juniors who may be thinking about continuing education, she said.
"It is so important for sophomores and juniors to come so that they can be prepared if and when they decide to go to graduate school" Bellar said.
When asked if she was planning on attending the workshop Grace Maness, a Knoxville sophomore, said she does not plan to attend.
"I might want to go to grad school but I probably will not start looking into it until I am well into my junior year," Maness said.
The workshop will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is an open session. For more information on this workshop or graduate programs, contact the UTC graduate school at (423) 425-4666.
