Campus police is implementing new security measures for housing areas, Campus Police Chief Robert Ratchford said.

According to Ratchford, the UTC Place properties will receive 270 cameras.

In a meeting Jan. 25 concerning placement of the cameras, Ratchford said, "the systems are still under planning."

The additional cameras are to serve the largest population density at any given time on campus, and target unauthorized persons, trespassing, high activity, and remote visibility at UTC Place, Ratchford said.

The cameras will not provide immediate aid to victims or be a deterrent to crime, but will benefit solving crimes after the fact, according to Ratchford.

Another security improvement is the text messaging system, which is projected to be functioning within this semester, "maybe by the end of next month," Ratchford said.

It is to be an information system for students, staff and faculty. Inclement weather, imminent danger or threat to public safety will be on the only types of messages sent across it.

Rave is going to be the vendor for the system. They are currently constructing a Web site specific for registration of cellular phones.
