More than 1,000 boats and 5,000 rowers competed at the Head of the Hooch race on the Tennessee River Saturday and Sunday.
The Head of the Hooch, formerly the Head of the Chattahoochee, is a three-mile headrace along the riverfront and is jointly sponsored by the Atlanta Rowing Club and the Lookout Rowing Club of Chattanooga.
Participants from all over the nation were involved in the regatta, including the U.S. National Team and crews from Germany and England. Races ranged from high school groups to masters.
"It went really well," said heavweights rower Shelley Brand, Chattanooga sophomore. "There were over a thousand boats there and our men's heavyweight varsity 4+ got third out of 33."
The men also placed eighth of 32 in the Men's College and Club Novice 4+ event at 00:19:43.4. And the women placed fourth of 11 in the Women's Club 8+ event at 00:20:17.9. However, in the Women's College and Club Novice 8+ event, UTC placed 17 of 30 at 00:22:33.1.
