The slim hopes that remained for a Southern Conference Title and a winning season were extinguished Saturday for the Mocs football team.

The team tried to spoil homecoming for the Elon Phoenix, but a good offensive day wasn't enough.

Behind 268 passing yards and two touchdowns from Antonio Miller, UTC looked efficient on offense, but the defense was unable to contain Elon's potent offense.

Elon's freshman quarterback, Scott Riddle, picked apart the UTC defense throwing for over 300 yards in his 7th straight game.

The Phoenix quarterback broke school records for single season touchdowns, completions and yards in the game, all but securing his position as the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year.

Led by Riddle, Elon (6-2, 4-1) remains tied atop the Southern Conference standings with Wofford, while UTC (2-6, 2-3) is just trying to keep their head above water. Rodney Allison's team is guaranteed another losing season, making it nine out of the last ten years.

But Allison did everything he could to keep his team in this one early, reaching deep into his bag of tricks.

The Moc's trailed 21-7 in the second quarter when the talented UTC receivers once again started throwing passes. Wide receiver Blue Cooper has two touchdown passes on the season, but this time another wideout, Clint Woods, hit Antonio Miller for a 33-yard score.

The momentum was quickly erased, though, as Riddle used a more conventional 51-yard pass to regain the lead on Elon's next play from scrimmage.

The Mocs were able to once again pull within a touchdown on a 5-yard run from Bryan Fitzgerald, but the defense couldn't get a stop until it was too late.

UTC went into halftime trailing 35-21, when both teams made the necessary adjustments.

Only ten points were scored in the second half, and Elon held off the visiting Mocs for a 38-28 final.

The Mocs were coming off a close contest against Furman where they lost 28-22 at Finley Stadium.

Western Kentucky will visit the Mocs this weekend. The Hilltoppers are 5-3. The game kicks off at 1 p.m.
