The Lady Mocs fought to stay in the race for first place in the Southern Conference with a 3-1 win over Elon Sunday. On Tuesday, UTC fell to Lipscomb 3-2 in a non-conference matchup.

Chattanooga, who is 8-1 in the SoCon, is jockeying for the top spot with the College of Charleston, who is 9-1 in conference play.

The Lady Mocs defeated Elon 30-23, 26-30, 30-25 and 30-28 in a 3-1 victory.

Elon took the lead 9-7 early on in the first game, but UTC soon took control of the game with a 10-2 run. The Lady Mocs maintained the lead, wrapping it up for a 1-0 match lead.

Elon bounced back, however, to outscore Chattanooga in the second game for a 1-1 match tie.

The Lady Mocs began game three with an 8-1 run over Elon. The game then changed hands twice with four ties before Elon took an 18-17 advantage. However, UTC came back for the win and 2-1 match lead.

The fourth game was just as competitive, but the Lady Mocs put the game away after numerous ties and lead changes for a 3-1 match victory.

Most of the match was played without senior setter Bethany Herndon, Richmond, Texas, after she left the match for an injury.

"We did marvelous considering we lost our first setter due to a knee injury and our back up center was out as well, so we had to play our third," Lisa Rhodes, head coach, said.

The Elon game brought junior Lara Newberry, Chattanooga, seven digs away from breaking the school record of 2,058, which she accomplished in the game against Lipscomb.

She registered 35 digs, Tuesday, to put her as the all-time leader in that statistic. The record was previously set by Kylie Hunter from 1990-93.

The Lipscomb match, however, was a battle as the Lady Mocs eventually lost 3-2 with scores of 30-28, 23-30, 30-22, 26-30 and 15-11.

The Lady Mocs go to face Appalachian State this Saturday for a 1 p.m. match starting time.
