UT employee survey polls morale

According to UTC's scores on the UT system's Employee Satisfaction Survey, UTC is on par with the other four UT campuses for employee and staff morale.

In the twenty item summary of the survey, three problem areas and three excellent areas were identified, according to Chuck Cantrell, assistant vice chancellor university relations. The remaining scores are considered to be in the acceptable range.

"When we find one of these areas with a low score, we make sure that people are aware of the problem and in some cases provide training," he said.

All faculty and staff are given a confidential user name and password so they have the option of participating in the online survey, according to Cantrell.

"This is one of the problems with the survey; it is not particularly easy to do because you get this little piece of paper written on a letter with your user name and password and it is very easy to lose it," Cantrell said.

"It is not terribly difficult, it's not onerous but it is not simple. If you lose it you have to take extra steps or you can't fill it out," Cantrell said. "It's not particularly user friendly in the way that you would want a satisfaction survey to be."

According to the survey results on the UT System Web site, the response rate of this year's Employee Satisfaction Survey was 23 percent with an overall employee satisfaction of 74 percent.

Joanie Sompayrac, accounting professor, said she sent out an e-mail to the faculty detailing her concerns over the survey results.

"Am I the only one who is bothered that two-thirds of our faculty and staff feel that we cannot speak without fear of reprisals?" Sompayrac wrote in the e-mail.

"I know many are complaining about the fact that 80 percent of our faculty and staff feel underpaid, but a huge majority of our faculty and staff fear retribution for speaking out on this or any topic."

According to Sompayrac, after sending out the e-mail, she received a few public responses.
