A new writing award will honor Ken Smith, a creative writing and UC Foundation professor, who died Oct. 7 at age 63.
According to Verbie Prevost, head of the English department, Smith is being honored for his many years of teaching and contribution to the English department.
"He was exceptional in teaching western humanities," Prevost said. "He loved teaching classical literature and was very good at it," she said. "The thing everyone will miss most was his wonderful sense of humor."
According to the UTC Web site, "In honor of Ken Smith, his love of writing and his commitment to students and his colleagues, the English Department is establishing the Kenneth Smith Fiction Prize to be awarded annually to an outstanding student writer."
Prevost said the English department has received contributions for the prize and expect more in the future.
The award will be available to all UTC students via a short story contest and will be awarded annually at the English banquet, Prevost said.
Earl Braggs, English professor, said, "He was the sweetest man I ever knew."
Braggs also said that Smith was an honest teacher, and would not hold back telling students how to make their writing better.
"[Students] really appreciated that," Braggs said.
