A search firm has been selected to assist in the search process for UTC's next provost.

Baker Parker and Associates, an executive search firm based in Atlanta, is the firm that has been selected. According to their Web site, Baker Parker is "exclusively dedicated to providing superior service … in identification and recruitment of outstanding professionals for senior executive positions."

Fran Bender, chair of the university's provost search committee, made the announcement to faculty and staff in a recent e-mail.

A subcommittee of the provost search committee appointed by Chancellor Roger Brown made this selection.

"Baker Parker was selected because of its experience in identifying and successfully placing people in higher education positions," Bender said. "Further, the firm is very familiar with UTC as Baker Parker was successful in helping UTC identify and recruit Chancellor Brown and Athletic Director Rick Hart."

According to the provost search Web site, the "ideal candidate" for the provost position should have several qualifications, including "understanding and knowledge of trends and issues in higher education," "demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, research and creative activities, and public service," "demonstrated commitment to affirmative action," and "demonstrated ability to relate well to students, faculty, staff and alumni, and to the leadership of the community."

The site also lists that the new provost should give attention to "dealing with continuing budget constraints and issues," among other things.

The entire provost search committee is composed of 15 voting members and two non-voting members who provide administrative support.

Terry Denniston, assistant to the chancellor, one of the non-voting members of the provost search committee, said that the search process has been going very well.

She said the committee's main job for right now is going through applications as they are submitted.
