The Lady Mocs soccer team is still looking for their first Southern Conference win of the season after a home loss to Western Carolina in a double-overtime match on Oct. 15.
Neither team had scored until the 103rd minute when Catamount Nikki Lombardo sent a shot into the upper right-hand corner of the goal, giving WCU the 1-0 victory.
UTC coach J.D. Kyzer said that the Mocs played well defensively, but that they need to put the ball in the net more often.
Chattanooga had two great scoring opportunities in the second half.
At the start of the period, Chelsea Hurst, a freshman from Flintville, Tenn., took off toward the goal and made it past Western Carolina defenders before sending a shot wide of the net.
In the final seconds of regulation, Nikki Brannen, a Chattanooga sophomore, fired a shot that was blocked by WCU goalie Kelly Gulledge to force overtime.
Western Carolina outshot the Lady Mocs 31-12, but senior goal-keeper Stacey Matthiessen, out of Rialto, Calif., racked up 13 saves.
After the match against the Catamounts, the NCAA ranked Matthiessen fourth in the nation with 8.92 stops per game.
The loss drops UTC to 3-9-1 on the year and to 0-6-0 in conference play.
WCU improved their record to 8-5-2 overall and 4-1-1 in SoCon action.
UTC's final home game of the year is Oct. 20 against the Wofford Terriers at the North River Soccer Complex.
The team's four seniors, Tessa Drumsta, of Duluth, Minn., Maya Peel, of Coral Springs, Fla., Melyna Valdez, of El Paso, Texas, Jessica Mack, of Ooltewah, Tenn., and Matthiessen will be honored prior to the match.
Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
After the contest against Wofford, the Lady Mocs will play their remaining three regular season games on the road against conference rivals College of Charleston, The Citadel and Davidson.
The SoCon Tournament will start on Nov. 1 with the semi-final and final rounds being played in Cullowhee, N.C., Nov. 3-5.
