Lady Mocs' errors prove costly against Lipscomb

The UTC volleyball Mocs went 1-2 in week seven action, defeating Wofford (30-25, 30-21, 30-22) and losing to Lipscomb (15-30, 19-30, 21-30) and Furman (25-30, 27-30, 24-30).
In the match against Lipscomb on Oct. 10, the Lady Bison stifled UTC's attack by allowing only 25 kills, eight of which were knocked in by Leslee Ball, a junior from Sycamore, Ill.
Offensive mistakes proved to be a problem for Chattanooga after three of the first six points of the match resulted from errors.
Lipscomb did their share of offensive work, tallying seven service aces with three coming from Alex Scruggs.
Scruggs also added 13 kills.
UTC held a 10-3 lead in game two before allowing the Bison to storm back and out away eight straight points.
Game three was up for grabs before more Chattanooga errors sealed the sweep for Lipscomb.
In the loss to Furman on Oct. 14, Ball led the Lady Mocs with 13 kills.
Sarah Bass, a junior out of Baton Rouge, La., added eight kills of her own, in addition to four block assists.
Michaela Huff, a Dallas sophomore, assisted on 34 of UTC's 39 kills.
On the defensive side, Kelsey Amundson, a junior from Houston, had 22 digs while Lara Newberry, a Chattanooga sophomore, put up 21.
Newberry's solid play moved her up to No. 6 on the career digs list with a total of 1,214.
Another Moc, Julianna Martinez, a junior from Houston, gained a spot on a UTC career list.
Martinez now sits at No. 5 for total blocks with 234.
UTC took on Wofford on Oct. 15 where Jamie Engel, a junior transfer out of Troy, Ill., led the Lady Mocs' attack with nine kills, while Ball and Martinez each added eight.
Huff tallied 39 assists on the team's 44 kills and contributed seven digs.
Three Lady Mocs earned double digit defensive digs out of the team's 69 total.
Newberry led the way with 15, Amundson added 13 and Ball put up 11.
Ball also had one block solo and four block assists.
Martinez earned four block assists and is now tied for fifth on the career list with 188.
The Lady Mocs are now 8-13 on the year and 6-3 in Southern Conference play.
UTC's next match will be on the road against the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, a team the Mocs defeated three games to two on Sept. 23.
