A group project in a Business Marketing 313 class has several UTC students recruiting volunteers and financial donations for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Chattanooga.

"I really hope our project can help get the word out about Big Brothers Big Sisters," Ashley Ward, a Knoxville senior, said. "Kids need positive influences in their lives and this is a great way to get involved."

The group members for the project are Anastasia Birger, Ellen Dunkin, Zach Moses, Dallas Rector and Ashley Ward. They said they are trying to get more student involvement in Big Brothers Big Sisters.

This mentoring organization was founded in 1904 and has served over 225,000 children across the country.

Adult volunteers Mari VanderWoude and her husband Dale are "Bigs" to two girls who are 11 and 14.

"Being a Big simply means sharing your life with a child and making them feel valued," VanderWoude said. "It means encouraging them to develop their talents and perhaps providing avenues for that to happen. It means sharing your heart and listening and learning from them.  It is a friendship that grows through shared experiences with benefits to all involved."

People can volunteer either through the community-based program or the school-based program. The community-based one requires 12 hours a month. The school-based one requires volunteers go to their "Little's" school once a week and help the child have fun. Every volunteer is screened, trained and supervised to make sure the relationships are beneficial for both people.

Dallas Rector, a Knoxville senior said: "I would encourage campus groups to help out. It is really easy, and it makes a big difference in the life of a child who has no one else to look up to."

This group of students will be selling makeup in the UC in the next two weeks to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

They will be accepting volunteer applications Oct. 17. Big Brothers Big Sisters is located at 2015 Bailey Ave., and can be contacted at 698-8016.
