With Election Day quickly approaching on Nov. 7, the U.S. Senate race in Tennessee is shaping up to be perhaps the most important political contest in the entire country.

The outcome of this race could very likely decide which party controls the U.S. Senate. Equally important, the candidate that is elected will be responsible for representing the people of Tennessee.

We are thus faced with the crucial task of deciding which candidate - Rep. Harold Ford Jr. or Bob Corker - will do the best job in this position.

In general, both Ford and Corker appear to be respectable and upstanding men. Both have been very successful in their respective fields and are admired by many.

However, without a doubt, Ford is not only more qualified and better suited for the job, but he is also the superior candidate. Here are a few reasons why Tennesseans should vote for Harold Ford Jr.:

The War in Iraq

Unquestionably, the Iraq war is the most important issue in the upcoming election.

American and Iraqi casualties continue to steadily increase. As sectarian violence increases, it appears that either a civil war is already underway or will be in the near future.

In a few weeks, Tennesseans must decide between two candidates with extremely different approaches to the war in Iraq.

Bob Corker supports a "stay-the-course" strategy.

On the other hand, Harold Ford Jr. has clearly demonstrated his desire to seek new strategies. In the debate at UTC, he argued that the situation in Iraq strongly hinders the United States' ability to address increasing threats from North Korea and Iran.

Ford expressed his support for a plan that would divide Iraq into three regions - Kurdish, Sunni and Shiite - and establish a federal government. This plan, he explained, would establish a system similar to the one that was used in Bosnia that has proven successful.
