The Lady Mocs soccer team remains winless in Southern Conference play after losing 3-1 on the road to the Spartans of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and 3-2 at home to Elon.
On Oct. 6 against UNCG, Maya Peel, of Coral Springs, Fla., prevented a shut-out by scoring late in the second half off an assist by Amy Schermerhorn, a sophomore from Chattanooga.
The goal, the 10th of Peel's career, gives the senior forward sole possession of eighth place on the career charts.
The scoring opportunity came after UTC was awarded a free kick after a foul by UNCG.
Schermerhorn was able to get the ball to Peel who shot it past Greensboro's keeper, Michelle Crowder.
The Spartans started scoring early, going up 1-0 in the eighth minute on a goal by Jennifer Bronson.
Ten minutes later, UNCG's Kelly Attayek scored her first of two goals on a crossing pass from the left corner of the field.
Bronson connected with Attayek in the 36th minute to put the Spartans up 3-0, a lead they would take into halftime.
After going into the game ranked eighth in the nation with an average of 8.63 saves per game, goalie Stacey Matthiessen, a Rialto, Calif., senior, tied her career-best 15 saves in the match against UNCG.
The Spartans, who are 4-7-2 overall, have beaten the Mocs seven times in 11 meetings and are now 3-0-1 in league play.
In the last match-up, UNCG came away with a 2-0 victory over Chattanooga in the first round of the SoCon tournament.
The Phoenix of Elon defeated the Lady Mocs on Oct. 8 in an afternoon game at the North River Soccer Complex.
Elon scored their first goal in the 11th minute when Alisa Pettit found the back of the net on a right-field crossing pass from Elizabeth Boozer.
UTC freshman Elizabeth Southall, of Douglasville, Ga., recorded her first goal of the season 10 minutes later, leveling the score at 1-1.
Pettit would strike again for Elon in the 27th minute off a Jaclyn Immordino corner kick.
Boozer would give Elon a two-goal lead in the middle of the second half, but Chelsea Hurst, a freshman from Flintville, Tenn., would score her fourth goal of the year to bring the Lady Mocs to within one.
Chattanooga thought they had tied the score at 3-3 late in the half after sophomore Nikki Brannen netted a penalty shot, but just before play resumed, the referee determined that the penalty should not have resulted in a direct kick.
Coach J.D. Kyzer said that the official signaled a direct kick and that the goal's nullification let his team down.
UTC's most recent losses drop their record to 3-8-1 on the year and 0-5-0 in SoCon play.
The Lady Mocs' next home game will be against Western Carolina on Oct. 15 at the North River Soccer Complex.
Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
