Hundreds of students not receiving e-mail messages sent by UTC

As a result, students can no longer have campus e-mail automatically sent to personal accounts

UTC will stop the automatic forwarding of e-mail to outside accounts beginning Nov. 6 because a large number of students are not receiving university e-mail.

According to university registrar Linda Orth, this means students will have to check their UTC e-mail accounts to receive any messages originally sent to UTC e-mail addresses.

Orth said the automatic forwarding feature is being disabled because too many students forward their e-mail to more disposable Yahoo or Hotmail accounts. Students then quit using these accounts or forget about them, and important e-mails from the university are not received.

Students are constantly not getting university e-mail, Orth said.

"For instance, we have sent mass e-mails and gotten 400 to 500 bounced back. That is not good practice when UTC e-mail is the official method of communication for the university," she said.

"And this is happening with all departments, not just records and registration, or housing, or the bursar's office. It is also occurring with individual advisors or instructors. And I'd like to say that all information in university e-mails is important, but there we are talking about class assignments that affect grades," she continued.

Additionally, Orth added, "We can't ensure the security of e-mail being forwarded to other accounts, and we can reasonably ensure the security of e-mail sent to UTC e-mail accounts."

Tony Parsley, the university's information systems operations manager, said: "A large percentage of students forward their e-mail [to other accounts] … probably just for convenience. This will affect many."

Laura Horne, a Chattanooga freshman, said she used to have her e-mail forwarded to her Hotmail account, but started using her UTC e-mail account after professors told her they would not accept e-mails from non-UTC addresses.

"I don't like the UTC e-mail. It's really plain and the layout is outdated. I wish it worked more like a Hotmail account," she said.
