Problems arise at UTC Place again

UTC Place is often advertised as being the "place to live."

Housing in this complex costs more than anywhere else on campus.

With premium prices, one would think premium service would follow, right?

Wrong.

Although there are several malfunctions that could be pointed out about UTC Place, the state of the gym facility in the 5000 building needs some serious attention.

The so-called "gym" only has a few machines to choose from. We understand that it is a limited space and should not be compared to the local Sports Barn; however, there is a problem when half of the limited number of machines do not work.

The only elliptical trainer in the facility is in shambles. Screws are missing from one of the foot pedals, causing the machine to be hazardous to anyone who attempts to use it. The trainer has been broken for over a month. Instead of complete removal and replacement of the malfunctioning machine, it was simply unplugged.

Unplugging a machine that is missing screws does not stop anyone from plugging it back in. And it certainly does not fix the problem.

Some of the weight machines are missing cords, causing them to be inoperable. Handle grips are also missing from some of the machines, making them uncomfortable for anyone to use. There are several stationary bikes, but only two actually work. The concept of having a gym inside of the building is only useful if the equipment is usable. Unless gym users are in the mood for battling other students for a run on one of the three treadmills, they will be out of luck.

UTC Place management needs to get in gear and get the gym in shape.
