For many, Mondays are the most dreaded day of the week. But for students who are broke and tired of the standard UTC dinning, fare, Monday nights at Amigos Mexican Restaurant can be a saving grace.
The special of the night at Amigos is 50 cent tacos. Many students gather at Amigos on Monday nights to take advantage of cheap food, and the opportunity to hang out with friends in what is becoming a tradition amongst students.
Adam Anderson, a Chattanooga freshman, said he has been going to Amigos on Monday nights for over a year.
"Other than the 50 cent tacos, it's a good way to hang out with friends," he said.
Adam Tiano, also a Chattanooga freshman, said he always runs into someone he knows on 50 cent taco night.
Tiano said, "Its cheap and a good place to hang out with friends."
Israel Granados, assistant manager at the Amigos in Brainerd, said Monday nights are the busiest night of the week.
"We sell a lot of tacos," Granados said. "We have had people order over 20 tacos."
Brittany Sykes, a Nashville freshman, recently experienced her first Monday night at Amigos.
She said the price of the tacos persuaded her to try it.
"I spent a $1. 50, and I was full," she said. "It is a good price for good food."
A friend introduced Jeremy Bourgoin, a Nashville freshman, to taco night. He said he never had to be persuaded to return.
"I come almost every Monday," Bourgoin said.
Allison Woodall, a Knoxville junior, said she goes to Amigos about three Mondays out of the month.
"I like 50 cent taco night because it's cheap and offers a break from UC food," she said. "The tacos cost less than the ones at Taco Bell, and they taste better."
Students frequently have to wait for more than 15 minutes before they can be seated, but many said it is worth the wait.
Jonathan Revelle, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and a grad student at UTC, said he doesn't mind waiting for to be sat.
