The UTC volleyball team went undefeated in the fourth week of regular season play after beating Western Carolina, the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and Elon.

The Lady Mocs defeated Western Carolina 30-22, 30-28, 31-29 in Cullhowhee, N.C., on Sept. 20.

Jamie Engel, a junior transfer from Troy, Ill., earned her second double-double of the season after tallying 14 kills and 11 digs.

Chattanooga took game one after scoring 16 of 19 straight points with the game-winner coming off an ace by Michaela Huff, a sophomore from Dallas.

In game two with Houston junior Kelsey Amundson serving, the Mocs put up four successive points and never lost the lead.

At match point, the Catamounts refused to give up and held on for five rallies before an error gave the game to UTC.

The strong serve of Huff and the skillful play of Engel and Leslee Ball, a junior from Sycamore, Ill., allowed Chattanooga to win game three in overtime.

Amundson led the UTC defense with 22 digs and seven kills while Bethany Herndon, a Richmond, Texas junior, added 36 assists.

Herndon is fifth on the all-time assists list and is 169 away from fourth.

The win was the Lady Mocs' first in conference play and third on the season, improving their record to 3-9.

Katie Huntsman, a Lebanon, Tenn., senior, thinks that the Lady Mocs' season is now on an "upswing.

"I think we have finally started to feel comfortable with one another," Huntsman said. "Our first conference win is a huge step in the right direction."

UTC gained their second conference win at home on Sept. 23 when the Mocs defeated UNC Greensboro 26-30, 30-22, 23-30, 30-26, 15-12.

Chattanooga gained and lost momentum several times during the marathon two-hour and 22-minute match, but after winning game four, the Lady Mocs stayed in control.

Ball hit a career-high 22 kills and Engel recorded her third double-double with 21 kills and 13 digs.

Herndon added 22 digs of her own, along with 60 assists.

Julianna Martinez, a junior out of Austin, Texas, earned nine block assists and is now No. 6 on the career block assist list.

The Lady Mocs racked up their third straight conference win after sweeping Elon at Maclellan Gym 30-22, 30-21, 30-28.

Chattanooga took the lead early in games one and two, recording 18 kills in the first game and 16 in the second.

Amundson got the Mocs out of trouble in the third game, tallying a service ace and tying the game 22-22.

The last point of the match was scored when Herndon set up an Amundson kill.

Herndon had 39 assists in the game and is now 70 assists away from moving up to fourth all-time in career assists.

The Lady Mocs' next game is on Sept. 30 when they travel to Statesboro to face Georgia Southern.

Game time is 5 p.m.
