The UTC Lady Mocs soccer team finished up non-conference play last week, but in doing so, dropped their record to 3-5-1 after losing on the road to Alabama A&M and at home to Furman.

The Mocs traveled to Huntsville, Ala., on Sept. 21 to take on the Bulldogs where AAMU got on the board first in the 13th minute off of a Rachel Sepeng shot.

Sepeng would tally her second goal of the game six minutes later, taking the Bulldogs into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Alberta Annan and Sepeng would each put another goal on the board for AAMU before Chattanooga sophomore Nikki Brannen took a pass from Chelsea Hurst, a Flintville, Tenn., freshman, to score her fourth goal of the season.

Sepeng would end up with a hat trick and is now tied with Annan for first place on the team with four goals.

Despite being outshot 21-19, the Bulldogs rolled to a 5-1 victory.

Keeper Stacey Matthiessen, a senior from Rialto, Calif., put up seven saves, bringing her season total to 62.

Matthiessen would earn a career-best 15 saves when the Mocs hosted Furman on Sept. 24 at the North River Soccer Complex.

The Lady Paladins had momentum early, racking up four shots in the first four minutes of the game before Chattanooga took control.

UTC took 14 shots in the first half to the Paladins' 12 but neither team found the back of the net.

Furman broke the tie 20 minutes after halftime when Rachel Fry got a breakaway and beat Matthiessen to tally her second goal of the year.

The Lady Paladins sealed the victory with five minutes left to play when Anna Betton put Furman up 2-0.

Mocs head coach JD Kyzer said that his team played a strong game but were unable to prevail.

Kyzer also praised the play of Matthiessen who has a personal best 77 saves on the season.

She is ranked 13th by the NCAA with 7.86 saves per game.

The Mocs are still focused on the regular season, but according to El Paso, Texas senior Melyna Valdez, the team has thought about tournament play.

"Right now we are not directly focused on the postseason because it is so early into conference play, but it is definitely in the back of our minds," Valdez said.

UTC will play host Southern Conference foe Georgia Southern on Oct. 1 at the North River Soccer Complex.

Kick off is set for 2 p.m.
