After being established a month ago, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's bowling team prepares for their first tournament on Oct. 14, in Indianapolis, Ind.
The bowling team began with UTC students Reid McPherson and Mitch Curran. In the spring 2006 semester, the students decided to organize a group with other students who were talented bowlers and form a competing team.
"There are students here that are very talented and they are not doing anything with it," Curran, a sophomore, said. "It [would] be a shame for all of them to sit in college while their talent was wasting away."
McPherson, a senior majoring in computer science, said that once they had a group of nine potential bowlers, they were able to get sponsorship from the United States Bowling Congress.
The USBC is the sponsor of collegiate bowling tournaments around the nation. This year's season includes a total of nine tournaments for the team.
The team will be competing against universities from Nebraska, Arizona and Kansas among others, and the tournament closest to Chattanooga will be held in Nashville.
Both McPherson and Curran have been bowling since they were children, and they shared the desire to form a team to use their talent and admiration for bowling.
McPherson and Curran said that tryouts take place at the beginning of every year, and interested students can prepare to tryout for the next season.
Students can attain information about the team by contacting the student organization office.
