This week's meeting started with an announcement on behalf of the chancellor. He wished to thank SGA and other UTC students for their support at last Saturday's football game. The chancellor plans on intermingling with the students more at future games.
Guest speaker Julie Sanders presented the idea of starting a Miss UTC pageant, and SGA discussed the advantages and disadvantages. Although such a pageant would be a source of large scholarships for female students, it is also costly. SGA will discuss the matter further in later meetings.
SGA unanimously voted in support for two new organizations: Up 'till Dawn and Graduate Athletic Training Organization, or GATO.
Up 'till Dawn is a volunteer program that was designed to help pay for the running of St. Jude's Hospital.
The program will assemble teams that consist of a team leader and five members. Each member needs a list of 50 names and addresses to whom they will send donation requests.
St. Jude's will provide the material and preprinted letters, and the teams will be responsible for sending the material.
Each person who completes this task will be entered into a raffle for a free iPod Video and each team that receives a total donation amount of $750 or more will be allowed to attend an all night celebration on Feb. 2. There is no fee to participate in this program and registration is due by Oct. 2. An all-team meeting will take place on Oct. 17.
Sharyce Banks spoke about GATO, which is devoted to performing volunteer work with athletics and the community. It will also allow athletic trainers to attend athletic conferences.
Dee Anderson presented more information about the upcoming debate on Oct. 10. The chancellor received 10 tickets, and the remaining 90 were divided between student development and academic affairs. SGA is seeking a way for themselves and for general students to have a way of getting tickets.
Campus observations committee Senator Keeton Christian announced a project that will place more bike racks around campus. Because the school already owns five unmounted racks, this project will be very cheap.
Her committee also announced a plan to resurrect the Unity in the Community program from two years ago. It is a program in which UTC organizations and off-campus organizations work together for community projects. It is hoped that it will become a new tradition at UTC.
SGA Vice President Bill Staley reminded everyone about the blood drive at 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 6 on Oak Street. Entertainment committee Senator Reggie Smith announced a final location for the poetry event on Oct. 11, which is Café Mi Aroma. It will take place at 7 p.m.
