Food services has plans to increase student satisfaction.

Director of food services Xavier Flores said his department is taking major steps in order to better serve students and give them more of what they want.

"More fun for students, more communication and bridging the gap between food services and students are some of food services' goals this year," Flores said.

Brittany Posey, a Chattanooga junior, was asked Sept. 16 what she would change about food service at UTC. She suggested a sushi bar. Apparently, food services was already thinking along those lines because a sushi bar was added Sept. 18.

"We don't want students to get bored with the atmosphere or their choices," he said. "Hopefully, students will come to expect new, fun, fresh experiences when they enter a dining location [on campus]."

The new sushi bar is open Monday through Friday in the UC.

Matt Harms, assistant food service director said alternatives are available for those who do not like sushi but want Asian food.

"Other Asian foods like 'hot bowls,' bowls of rice with choices of seasoned meat like Mongolian beef and broccoli or teriyaki chicken, and spring rolls are going to be offered," Harms said.

Flores said that a lot of effort has been made to decrease the amount of time students wait for food in the UC as well. He said that more 'grab and go' foods like fruit cups in to-go containers have been added. There are also more deep-fryers at Chik-fil-A to reduce the wait for French fries.

"The menu at Grille Works has been re-vamped to be more cost-effective for students and still offer them a great selection," Flores said. "A student can order a single patty burger with bacon and cheese, fries and a large drink and pay less than they would at McDonald's."

Food services also plans on making Campus Crossroads a place where students want to hang out. Some re-carpeting and new paint have already been done, Flores said. He said he hopes Crossroads will get more comfortable seating and be open later in the near future.
