Walking past the 5000 building the other day, I was appalled when I heard a few students yelling from one of the top floors at the parking attendant below in the parking lot across the street.

Apparently, the students were not too happy because the man was writing a few tickets to cars parked illegally. For a moment, I thought I might be back in high school, when such disrespectful behavior was common, but to hear it from college students was pathetic and embarrassing.

Seriously UTC, isn't it about time we give the guy a break? Yes, I know he can be annoying, especially with that wool hat he wears in 90-degree heat, but the guy is simply doing his job. What is he supposed to do, not write a ticket to a person parked illegally?

I mean the poor guy is easily the most hated man on campus, but all he is doing is making sure students are following the simple parking guidelines. It is not like he is out to get everyone, and he just writes tickets for the pure pleasure of it.

Here is a simple solution to all students out there who keep getting tickets: Park where you are supposed to.

Nothing is more annoying than trying to find a parking spot at 10 a.m., and seeing someone parked in a handicapped space or in a reserved lot when they only have a general decal. These people deserve to get tickets.

I can hear the argument now: "There are not enough spaces on campus."

I hate to break it to everyone, but we are not going to be getting any more parking in the near future. So instead of hurling your distasteful, derogatory remarks at a man doing his job, why don't you do what the rest of the student body does and get to school early to find a spot? Believe me, there are plenty of general spots available. All it takes is a little patience and an extra 10 minutes of your time.

For example, across from the McKenzie Arena, the general lots always have ample parking during the busiest time of day. However, students don't feel the need to park there because it is too far away from most of the buildings. Instead of walking a few extra minutes, some students will park in the wrong lot, get a ticket, and instead of taking responsibility for their violation, they place the blame on the school for not having enough parking.

In a perfect world, we would have closer parking lots with abundant parking, but unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world.

So, to the students who feel the need to disrespect a parking attendant - grow up. You are in college, so start acting like it.

I guarantee if the parking attendant wasn't around to write tickets, parking would be much worse at UTC then it already is.

So cut the guy some slack, park where you are supposed to and you won't have to deal with those annoying yellow tickets.
