The UTC Lady Mocs volleyball team improved their record to 2-9 at the IU Credit Union Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., last week.

Chattanooga took on Indiana University on Sept. 15 and were swept by the Hoosiers 27-30, 20-30, 25-30.

"It will all come together," Sarah Bass, a junior from Baton Rouge, La., said. "That is what the beginning of the season is for, learning what you need to fix before it counts."

Bethany Herndon, a Houston, Texas junior, posted 22 assists in the match and now leads the team in sets with 387.

Leslee Ball, a junior from Sycamore, Ill., put up 10 kills against Indiana, but a string of hitting and defensive errors hurt the Mocs.

"We'll just practice more and fix the little mistakes," Bass said.

UTC played their second game of the tournament on Sept. 16 against Southern Methodist University.

The Lady Mocs were defeated 30-21, 30-21, 30-26.

Jamie Engel, a Troy, Ill., junior, tallied nine kills and 12 digs in the match.

Her season total of 60 digs is good enough to put her in fifth place on the team.

Ball also put in a good performance for the Mocs, racking up nine kills and earning four block assists.

Her stellar play over the course of the weekend earned her All-Tournament Team honors.

Chattanooga and Mercer fought a tough battle in the day's second game.

The Lady Mocs prevailed 25-30, 30-21, 30-23, 28-30, 15-7 to earn their second win of the year.

The Lady Mocs would capitalize on six out of 13 kill-attempts in the fifth game.

"We know we're a good team and we know we have great players and coaches," Bass said.

Ball had 16 kills and nine digs against the Bears, and Herndon added 48 assists.

Herndon is 213 assists away from taking over the fourth spot on the all-time career assists list.

Julianna Martinez, a junior out of Austin, Texas, now sits at No. 8 on the all-time list of block assists with 158 after earning four block assists against Mercer.

Bass says that the team's strategy hasn't changed, despite the year's slow start.

"We win when it counts," she said.

The next home match is Sept. 23 versus UNC-Greensboro at Maclellan gym.

Game time is set for 2 p.m.
