The Ultimate Frisbee craze has started once again here on campus at UTC.

UTC has a men's and a women's Ultimate Frisbee team.

They practice every Monday and Wednesday evening on Challenger and Chamberlain fields from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

For those not familiar with Ultimate, the rules are very simple.

Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact club sport played with a Frisbee disc by two, seven-player squads.

There are usually between 12 and 15 players on each roster. The object of Ultimate is to score goals.

A goal is scored when a player passes the Frisbee to a teammate in the end zone when on offense or "attack," similar to football.

But there are a few twists that you should remember.

For starters, running with the disc is simply not allowed.

The disc may only be moved by means of player-to-player passes.

Also, any time a pass is incomplete, knocked-down or intercepted, there is an immediate change of possession.

"My favorite aspect of Ultimate is the concept of spirit of the game," men's senior captain Nick Moore said.

"This is one of the main things that sets Ultimate apart from other sports," he continued. "There is a respect and trust formed between teams that I never experienced in other sports. Also Ultimate, while being competitive, is very laid-back and fun."

There are several ways you can get more information about the Ultimate teams.

Students can pick up a flier in the UC, or stop by at any practice.

Chris Rogers, coach of the women's team called Moxie, said that both teams are still looking for players, and no prior experience is required.

Moore suggests that new students, "Come out to practice and give it a try. [Ultimate] is a great way to meet new people, have a lot of fun and to avoid or drop the freshman 15."

When asked about the benefits of playing Ultimate Frisbee, junior captain Cara Hauk answered, "You meet new people, form good friendships and travel."

Senior captain Emmie Williams said that she enjoys, "letting [her] aggression out."

The men's team (Swamp Donkeys) and women's team (Moxie) play in several tournaments each semester.

Their next scheduled tournament will take them to Nashville Oct. 7-8.

This tournament, called the Itch Fest, will be hosted by Vanderbilt University.
