The Lady Mocs' soccer team got their first shutout win of the season on Sept. 13 when they defeated Tennessee Tech 3-0.

Melyna Valdez, an El Paso, Texas senior, netted two first-half goals against the Golden Eagles for the second time in her career.

Her first score came in the fifth minute of the game off of a corner kick taken by Lenior City, Tenn., freshman Marlee Jenkins.

Valdez got the ball and knocked it past TTU goalie Loretta McNamee.

Maya Peel, a senior from Coral Springs, Fla., assisted on the goal.

Head coach JD Kyzer said the Mocs have been working on capitalizing on corner kicks, and he thinks that the team will gain confidence from the goal.

Valdez put UTC up 2-0 in the 37th minute after taking a pass from Elizabeth Southall, a Douglasville, Ga., freshman.

Valdez's only other two-goal game came against TTU on Sept. 23, 2003. She also posted three assists that day to give her a school-record seven points.

In the 80th minute Chelsea Hurst, a freshman out of Flintville, Tenn., put away her second goal of the season on pass a from Jenkins. Seconds later, Hurst would try to put Chattanooga up by four, but her shot clipped the goal post and went wide.

Keeper Stacey Matthiessen, a Rialto, Calif., senior, had 11 saves against TTU, bringing her season total up to 49. She is ranked 12th in the nation by the NCAA for saves per game with 8.0.

On Sept. 16, the Mocs traveled to Clarksville, Tenn., to take on the Lady Govs of Austin Peay.

APSU drew first blood on a goal by Ashley Beck five minutes into play.

Hurst had the chance to tie it up eight minutes later on a penalty kick, but Govs' keeper Brooke Adams stopped the shot.

Seconds before halftime, Hurst capitalized on a loose ball in the box after a failed clearing attempt by APSU, tying the game 1-1.

The Lady Govs would take the lead for good midway through the second half after Jessica Hosse scored an unassisted goal.

APSU would go up by a pair when they scored off of a Matthiesssen rebound.

According to Valdez, Chattanooga players do not take their mistakes personally, and she thinks that this sets the Lady Mocs apart from other teams.

"We take any criticism from our teammates as constructive [while] other players often retort what her teammates have to say," Valdez said.

UTC's next home will be Sept. 24 against Furman at the North River Soccer Complex. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
