The Mocs return home for the first time this season to take on Southern Conference powerhouse Georgia Southern in hopes of snapping a nine-game losing streak to the Eagles.
Chattanooga really needs to win this game to avoid falling to 1-3 on the season and putting themselves in a huge hole if they want to make the playoffs and contend for the Southern Conference title.
Georgia Southern is coming off an impressive 38-21 win over Coastal Carolina to even their record at 1-1, and the win gave new head coach Brian Van Gorder his first victory as the Eagles head coach.
The good news for Chattanooga is Jayson Foster, who ran for three touchdowns and 134 yards against the Mocs last season, has switched to wide receiver and has been underused so far in Van Gorder's new offensive scheme. The bad news is the Eagles are once again loaded in the backfield and UTC will have to contend with a two-headed monster in tailbacks Chris Covington and Lamar Lewis.
Covington leads Georgia Southern with 346 yards through two games and is averaging 6.8 yards-per-carry. Covington also has a knack for the big play, as evident by his 75-yard touchdown run earlier this season.
Lewis, the former Florida State University player, showed no ill-effects from an injury that kept him out of the season opener, as he rushed for 172 yards on only 15 carries last week.
Taking over for Foster as quarterback this year is Travis Clark. Clark has been solid, but not spectacular, running the Eagles' offense. This season Clark has passed for 233 yard in two games, with two touchdowns and one interception. Clark is only completing 51.3 percent of his passes this season. Look for Chattanooga to try and take away the running game by stacking the box and try and make Clark beat them with the throw.
On defense, the Golden Eagles are allowing 203 yards per game through the air and 20.3 yards per completion. Chattanooga's Antonio Miller will most definitely have to make plays with his arm to keep the Eagles defense from focusing solely on Eldra Buckley.
