The Chattanooga men's golf team had to battle not only a strong field, but also Mother Nature as they opened up the 2006 season at the Scenic City Invitational.

Despite all this, UTC posted the field's third-best final round score to finish seventh.

Charlotte won the three-day tournament with a a score of 890, finishing nine shots ahead of second place, Middle Tennessee State University.

The Mocs finished six shots behind fourth-place finisher, UAB, and narrowly finished behind Memphis and Ole Miss.

The seventh-place finish was a nice start to the season, and showed that the Mocs are poised to improve on last season's 89th final ranking, according to Golfstat ranking.

The finish also enabled the Mocs to finish ahead of Texas-Arlington, Virginia, SE Louisiana and Southern Mississippi, all teams that were ranked ahead of them last season.

Chattanooga was led by Bryce Ledford, who shot a 9-over-par. That score was good enough for the senior from Chattanooga to finish tied for 10th place.

Sophomore Ben Rickett, who played as an individual, shot a 2-under-par on the back nine to card a 75. The Surrey, England native finished tied for 12th at 226.

Senior Mitch Brock, a Lewisburg, Tenn., native, also shot a 75 to finish tied for 16th with a score of 227.

Jonathan Hodge had the second-best final round score in the field, shooting a 73 to salvage a 33rd place finish.

The Jefferson City, Tenn., native birdied the first hole, but ran into trouble by finishing out the front nine by bogeying the last five holes to shoot a 4-over par through the first nine.

Hodge quickly found his groove on the back nine, with an eagle on the 11th hole from 135 yards out.

A birdie on 17 pushed Hodge back to 1-over for the round, where he would finish.

The 73 score under windy conditions enabled Hodge to move past 29 golfers.

Freshman Fredric Qvicker, a Stockholm, Sweden native, and junior Tyler Neff from Knoxville were both making their Moc debuts and finished 26th and 39th respectively.

Rounding out the scoring for Chattanooga was freshman Daniel Wood. Wood a Northampton, England product, finished tied for 49th place with a three-day total of 235.
