New athletic director Rick Hart spoke to the Senators about how he hopes he can collaborate with the SGA.
He intends on moving forward with plans to make sports more self-sufficient within the next 10 years.
He said, "I inherited a great situation and it's only going to get better."
He also mentioned thus far, ticket sales have been lower than expected. However, he is planning new programs to help increase these sales and increase revenue in the athletics department.
Hart reminded SGA that student tickets to athletic events are free and encouraged them to come to the game.
He also said he is now looking for students to join a student committee to aid in athletic promotion.
In response to a question by Parliamentarian Eric Fox, Hart stated the athletics department is aiming toward Title IX compliance, and a women's golf team will begin play in 2008.
Because of the high number of female students at UTC, it will be difficult for the department to reach full Title IX compliance, he added.
Another guest speaker, David Burke, proposed a campus-wide Hurricane Katrina relief effort that he hopes will take more than 200 student volunteers to New Orleans over fall break.
SGA passed a proposal allocating $5,000 for transportation costs. Sign-ups for this trip will begin soon, and it will probably cost students about $50 to go.
Vice President Bill Staley announced he is working to make the SGA meetings shorter and more efficient.
Social Issues Committee Senator Margaret Franklin said a blood drive will take place on Oak Street on Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and continue from 2 to 4:30 p.m. She also announced a tentative date for a forum about the proposed homeless shelter near campus on Oct. 12 at 8 p.m.
Projects Committee Senator Clarence Shields is looking for students to create a yearbook staff. Interested students should contact him via e-mail at Clarence-Shields@utc.edu.
Advisor Dee Dee Anderson said a bus will provide transportation to this Saturday's football game. The bus will also be making a stop by UTC Place to pick up students. A tailgating party will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. right before the game.
Also, a pep rally will be held at noon on Friday.
Dean Jim Hicks warned that there will be an increased police presence to help curb illegal alcohol consumption. There can be no drinking in the stands and only aluminum and plastic in the pavilion.
Entertainment Committee Senator Reggie Smith announced he was making plans for a poetry night on Oct. 11. The Entertainment Committee is also planning a trip to Six Flags on Oct. 27, but time and costs are currently under discussion.
