Two Tennessee Senate hopefuls will engage in a debate on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. in the UC auditorium.

The event is open to students and to the public, but seating is limited.

The debate is the second of three between Republican Bob Corker and Democrat Harold Ford Jr., and will be televised on Channel 9.

Emily Ruth, a Nashville senior, said she hopes students will be allowed to actively participate.

She said: "I wish [the candidates] would be prepared to take questions, and that students were informed well enough in advance so they could prepare good questions. Students are gutsy; they will ask anything."

Corker grew up in Chattanooga, and was elected mayor of Chattanooga in 2001.

According to his Web site, during his term, the city's violent crime was dramatically reduced, the budget was balanced and billions were privately invested in schools and in the community.

Corker is pro-life, supports legislation protecting traditional marriage and advocates the use of alternative fuels and strong funding for defense and intelligence.

He also wants more controlled immigration policies, among other issues, the Web site also said.

The son of a former U.S. Representative, Congressman Ford is currently serving his fifth term in the House as a representative of the Ninth District of Tennessee (Memphis).

Ford sits on the House Budget Committee as well as the House Committee on Financial Services, and was appointed to the Transformation Advisory Group, which works with the Department of Defense to help the armed forces meet current and future national security threats, according to his Web site.

Additionally, Ford is a member of the moderate Blue Dog Coalition, which attempts, "to promote positions that bridge the gap between ideological extremes," and has worked with both Republicans and Democrats to come up with solutions to many issues, the Web site said. Ford is also active in several faith and community-based initiatives.
