Club sports receive funding from SGA

This semester, the Senate of the Student Government Association allocated $17,312 to fund the various club sports on campus. Providing money for club sports is one of the most important things that the Student Government Association does, according to one SGA executive.

Every semester, the SGA Senate allocates exactly half of their revenue to fund club sports. The Senate uses the other half to fund all of its other various activities and projects.

The club sports budget was carefully prepared this semester by Chris Mimms, the SGA club sports committee chairman, and Miles Ledford, the university coordinator of club sports and outdoor programming.

Mimms, a Gallatin, Tenn., senior, began the process by examining past SGA club sports budgets. Next, Ledford provided Mimms with the budget requests of each of the club sports competing this semester.

Mimms noted that the amount of money requested by all of the club sports far exceeded the amount that SGA was able to provide.

Mimms said that the rowing team alone requested an amount that was nearly twice as large as the entire club sports budget. Rowing, easily the largest club sport, is also the only one that is forced to heavily rely on outside funding.

The needs of all of the other sports are mostly met by the SGA allocation. This semester, the rowing team received by far the largest amount of money with $6,006.55.

"Once I receive the budget requests, I prioritize them and divide the money up as fairly as possible," said Mimms. "We can't give them all that they want, but we try to be as fair as we can."

This process involves taking into account the number of members in a group, as well as the activities for which the group plans on spending the money. Mimms noted that the lacrosse team received a special priority because this is their first year of operation. Lacrosse received the second-largest amount of money at $2,072.25.

Both the rowing team and lacrosse teams are very active this semester. Last week, the rowing team competed against Tulane and LSU, and later at Knoxville. The men's and women's novice and varsity rowers won most of their events against Tulane and LSU, and finished well at the Knoxville race also.
