There are about 8,300 students on this campus, and about 200 to 225 of those participate in club sports. Often when I talk about club sports, I get asked "What is the difference between club sports, intramurals and varsity sports?"

Club sports are a level below varsity sports. They are not recognized by the NCAA and they don't practice as much.

Club sports are a level above intramurals. They compete against other schools.

The level of commitment varies from sports to sport, but most practice twice a week and in at least three games a semester. In all, there are approximately 15 club sports on campus and there is something for everyone.

We have a men's and a women's teams in rugby, soccer, rowing, fencing and ultimate frisbee, as well as men's lacrosse, tennis and inline hockey.

There are also two "instructional" clubs which are the scuba and paddling clubs.

All of these clubs are open to students, faculty and staff, and while we have about 3 percent of the student population participating, it would be great to see more involvement.

The campus recreation department is here for the students, so if there's anything that you want to see, like a new club sport, let me know and we will do what we can to help you.

I know that there is one sport, baseball, that many students would like to see. We can help get that started if someone would be willing to be in charge.

In general, club sports are a great way to get involved and meet new people.

I play for the women's club soccer team, and I know that some of my favorite memories have involved this team, be they joking around at practice or traveling to tournaments.

We are all so different from each other, but somehow it works.

It has been a wonderful experience to be able to play a competitive sport while in college, and I hope that more of you will take the opportunity to get involved in a club sports, whether you start your own or join one that already exists.
