When you go to a small school, it's somewhat rare for the basketball team to get television coverage. So anytime it does happen it needs to be documented. UTC's game Saturday against the College of Charleston was aired on Fox Sports South, so naturally I decided to keep a running account of the game.
Just for reference, it is currently 60 degrees, sunny and I passed on a round of golf with some buddies. So instead of driving around in a golf cart, drinking and swearing, I will sit at home and watch the game. That's dedication, holmes.
(I guess I can still drink and swear, but it's not the same without the crappy golf and off-color jokes.)
Here are some opening numbers:
Over/under on the number of beers I will drink during the game - 6.
Over/under on time I will spend on other channels - 15 minutes.
If I was a betting man, I'd take the over on both of those. Anyway, without further ado, here is my account of UTC vs. the College of Charleston.
2 p.m. There is a quick intro to the game. Injured Moc Alphonso Pugh is shown on crutches with clouds surrounding him. It's like one of those dream sequences from "The Brady Bunch." Very bizarre.
Mike Hogewood and Bobby Cremins are the announcers for the game. They are probably Fox's fifth string team.
This should be good for some strange and awkward commentary. Cremins used to coach at Georgia Tech so Mike calls Bobby "coach." He also bears a striking resemblance to Hubie Brown which has a tremendous upside. This could turn out to be fun. I'm just waiting for Cremins to pull a Hubie and call a player long and deep.
2:05 p.m. I think Charleston plays in a high school gym. There might be 1,000 people there, but we'll have to wait for the official tally.
2:10 p.m. Cremins just informed us that we've got an intense SoCon game and not to turn the channel. He is trying to hype this game up, but it just isn't happening.
At the first media timeout, the Mocs lead 10-4. Cremins is "not impressed with the way the Mocs are handling the press." He also keeps calling John Shulman, "Shoeman."
