The UTC women's basketball program has the second-longest active winning streak in Division 1 after Chattanooga won two more conference games this past week against Elon and UNC-Greensboro, to bring their total to 16 consecutive games.
The Lady Mocs continued their assault on conference foes with an easy 77-47 victory over The Phoenix Saturday night in McKenzie Arena.
Alex Anderson tallied another double-double for UTC, and Brooke Hand had her usual shooting touch by knocking down four 3-pointers to pace Chattanooga.
Anderson, a sophomore from Stone Mountain, Ga., led all scorers with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Hand added 12 points.
Elon came out aggressive to start the game by scoring the first four points; before Chattanooga settled down and took a 28-16 lead on the heels of a 16-4 run that put the Lady Mocs in control. Chattanooga hit 56.5 percent from the field in the first half to take a 35-22 lead at the half.
The Lady Mocs showed Elon why they are undefeated in league-play by coming out in the second half with a 19-3 run to put the game out of reach. With Chattanooga ahead 27 points, coach Wes Moore emptied his bench as all 12 players saw significant minutes, including the freshmen.
"Earlier in the year, there were times where one or two possessions could change the outcome of the game so I didn't go as deep on the bench as I would have like to," Moore said. "Here at home, the freshmen are looking a bit more comfortable, so it's great getting their feet wet, get them ready for conference tournament time."
One of those freshmen was forward Ashley Huff, a Dandridge, Tenn., native, who notched a career-high six points, including her first collegiate 3-pointer, in just over eight minutes of action.
Chattanooga controlled the boards 39-22 and outscored them from the bench 37-11. For the game, UTC shot 56 percent from the floor, while also knocking down 10-of-18 3-pointers.
On Monday night, the Lady Mocs ran into a physical, determined UNC-Greensboro squad that served notice to Chattanooga that they can stand toe-to-toe with them come tournament time.
