Hugh Prevost, director of cooperative education and international study abroad programs, has been named the interim vice chancellor for student development.
Chancellor Roger Brown made the formal announcement to the university last Friday.
Brown said, "Hugh has worked for a long time to advance students' international exposure and experience, and I believe during that time he has gained a good feeling of how to work with students to achieve their goals."
Brown also said Prevost's experience at UTC is valuable to the department.
"A number of deans and directors are relatively new, and I wanted those people to have someone who has been at the university to help them develop a sense of [the] university's culture, or a sense of what we are and what we want to be," Brown said.
Prevost agreed he brings a unique point of view to the table.
He said: "I bring academic-world knowledge into student development. I've been on the academic side of things for 20 years, and over the years, I've worked with many department heads, many who have become my best friends on this campus."
Brown said Prevost will supervise all of the student support services of the university.
"For example, he will make sure fraternities and sororities, as well as our student clubs and organizations, have a successful environment. He will also oversee admissions, which is also a critical environment, as well as student health services," he said.
According to Prevost, his main project as the interim vice chancellor right now is working to put together the student development budget for next year.
While Prevost accepted the interim position, he will still be working closely with the study abroad and exchange programs.
He said: "Right now I am in the middle of deadlines for student exchanges and many other programs. I've had student I've been working with all year, and I'm not just going to dump them in someone's lap. Until the deadlines are over, I will be doing my job functions here two to three days a week, and working as vice chancellor two to three days a week."
