The Chattanooga Lady Mocs volleyball team capped a successful season with a trip to the Southern Conference tournament on Nov. 18 and 19. The No. 4 seeded Lady Mocs defeated Davidson in the first round but lost to No. 1 seed College of Charleston in the semifinals.

Chattanooga went five games with No. 5 seed Davidson, overcoming an early 2-1 disadvantage in the match.

The two teams went back and forth in the first game before Davidson went on a late tear to win 30-24. The Lady Mocs struck back in the second game cracking out a 30-23 victory. In game three, the Lady Wildcats regained the momentum to defeat the Lady Mocs 30-26.

Game four was as hotly contested as the first three with the game tied 30-30. Then Kelly Ramsey, a North Vancouver, British Columbia senior, stepped up big by sticking the volleyball in the corner and securing two straight points for the Lady Mocs to force a game five.

With the momentum firmly on their side, the Lady Mocs handled Davidson in game five with a 15-10 victory to win the match.

Lindsey Galloway, a Greenwood, Ind., senior, led the way for the Lady Mocs against Davidson, tallying 19 kills and 18 digs in the contest.

Perhaps the greatest highlight of this match for the Lady Mocs was the play of freshman libero Lara Newberry of Chattanooga, who chalked up 27 digs to become the first woman in SoCon history to compile over 700 digs in a season.

The Lady Mocs' win over Davidson was good enough to propel them to the semifinals and a match against No. 1 seeded volleyball powerhouse College of Charleston.

The Lady Cougars finished the regular season undefeated in conference play with a 27-1 overall record.

The Lady Mocs made a valiant effort but could not duplicate their success against College of Charleston. Chattanooga lost 3-0 (30-16, 30-15, 30-19) to end their season just short of the 20 win mark at 19-14. Newberry added 16 digs to her record season total in the game finishing with 736 on the year.

Chattanooga's successful year was good enough to earn a pair of Lady Mocs second team All-Southern Conference Honors.

Team leaders Galloway and Newberry both walked away with honors at the end of the regular season.

Galloway led the Lady Mocs in most offensive categories this season including kills with 390, kills per game with 3.42, and service aces with 56. Galloway also finished in the SoCon top ten in these three categories and finished the regular season with 17 double-doubles.

Newberry also capped her stellar freshman campaign with the SoCon Libero of the Year award, the first in Chattanooga's history, as well as the Freshman of the Year award.

In addition to setting the SoCon record for digs in a season, Newberry ranked seventh in the nation averaging 6.08 digs per game at the conclusion of the regular season.
