Responsbility is the answer to budget problems

Two weeks ago, university officials sent their budget "wish list" to the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, asking for more funding in a number of areas.

Chancellor Roger Brown said he does not expect the university to receive more funding this year than it did last year.

This dialogue between university and state officials concerns us.

Brown said he hopes tuition will not have to be increased, but it does not take a genius to figure out if the state does not give the university more money, then tuition is going to increase.

We fear that, once again, the burden of fiscal irresponsibility by the university is going to be placed on students.

It has been the stance of The Echo for over two years now that university officials need to cut expenses instead of taking advantage of students to increase revenue.

We encourage all students to write or call Brown or UT-system President John Petersen to tell them you are tired of increasing tuition costs, and you want them to find better ways of spending your money instead of simply asking for more.
