Along with lawyers and police officers, journalists have gotten a bad rap and are thought of as the enemy. Considering that even professional journalists have been pegged for plagiarism and inaccurate reporting, we understand that it may be easy to assume that journalists are ruthless or just out to get the scoop, no matter what the cost. But this is not the case with any Echo staff members.
Although all staff members of The Echo are students and we are learning with each situation we encounter, as journalists we do strive to meet the highest standards possible. The Society of Professional Journalist's code of ethics states that members of the society believe that "public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the foundation of democracy."
At The Echo, our goal is to "enlighten" UTC students, faculty and staff. We strive for accuracy and when we do make a mistake, we intend to correct it openly and honestly.
The Echo never seeks out controversy, but does have an obligation to report on events that we deem important. Additionally, as journalists we have to make decisions about what news is important and what stories should be covered. These decisions are made with careful consideration, honesty and without ulterior motives.
We hope to better society by presenting information in a way that allows each person to make educated decisions about important issues. We also monitor all open forums and public records in order to motivate all others to maintain honest and open communications. Journalists perform a service when reporting on news in the community and at UTC and cooperation from everyone is an important factor that affects our ability to do our jobs.
