The Men's basketball team improved to 2-1 after defeating Brevard College Monday night in McKenzie Arena.

Brevard (6-4) charged out to a 7-2 lead early in the game, but the Mocs countered with a 26-0 run of their own midway through the first half to defeat the Tornadoes 82-42.

Junior Steve Cherry, Byron, Ga., scored on a lay up at the 9:37 mark to kick start the scoring surge as the Mocs kept Brevard off the scoreboard for over seven minutes.

The Mocs shot 61 percent in the first period on their way to a commanding a 51-23 halftime lead.

"This was a game that we really weren't focused offensively. We were more focused defensively. We weren't very sharp offensively, and we were pretty sharp defensively." UTC head coach John Shulman said.

Chattanooga committed 21 turnovers in the game, but forced the Tornadoes into 21 of their own.

Senior Mindaugas Katelynas, Alytus, Lithuania led the Mocs with 16 points. He was a perfect 6-6 from the field and 4-4 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Kenny Hunt, Hurt,Va., and freshmen Ricky Hood, Tupelo, Miss., each netted a career-high 14 points.

The Mocs out rebounded Brevard 46-27 as Senior Chris Brown, Hopkins, S.C., and junior Charles Anderson, Chattanooga, produced eight apiece.

Despite good defensive pressure the Mocs could not find a way to stop Big Ten opponent Ohio State on the road.

Powered by a school record 17 3-pointers, the Buckeyes defeated UTC 84-67 in Columbus, Ohio.

Brown led the Mocs with 12 points and Katelynas and redshirt freshman Matt Malone, Greenville, Tenn., each scored 10.

Chattanooga tried to shut down Ohio State in the paint and force the Buckeyes to beat them from the perimeter. Unfortunately for the Mocs, Ohio State did just that, shooting 17-35 from behind the arc.

J.J. Sullinger led all scorers with 21 points and Ivan Harris added 17 hitting all five of his 3 pointers in the second half.

Six Chattanooga players reached double figures in the home opener as the Mocs torched Toccoa Falls 113-52 to deliver Head Coach John Schulman his first victory as a head coach.
