The Chattanooga Lady Mocs soccer team fell on hard times this weekend, experiencing their second and third loss of the year in one 48 hour span.
On Sunday, the Mocs traveled to Liberty Bell Field in Johnson City, Tenn. to take on the Buccaneers of East Tennessee State University, a Southern Conference rival.
The Buccaneers had yet to win a Southern Conference game this season. ETSU scored their first goal near the end of the first half, at the 39:20 mark.
This was only the second first half goal allowed by Chattanooga this season. The Buccaneers added another goal with only 1:53 left in the game making the final score 2-0.
UTC outshot East Tennessee State 23-4 in the match, but failed to score on any of those shots. Goalkeeper Stacey Matthiessen, a Rialto, Calif., sophomore, had only one save and split time with freshman Emily Cornett, a native Chattanoogan. This loss was also the second shutout of the year for the Mocs.
Chattanooga's first shutout of the year came two days before the ETSU match, when the Mocs took on Furman University here at Finley Stadium on Oct. 8.
The Paladins handed the Mocs their second loss of the year and first Southern Conference loss in a 1-0 battle.
UTC allowed its first opening half goal of the year against Furman which came after 34 minutes of play.
"Furman is a strong team," UTC head coach J.D. Kyzer said. "They are sure to be one of the top teams in the conference tournament. This game could have gone either way."
The Mocs were very close to scoring on several occasions during the game. Most notably just a minute before the Paladins scored when the fourth leading scorer in the nation, Diana Jallo, a Soddy Daisy, Tenn., junior, narrowly missed an open shot that bounced off of the left goal post.
Both teams made fourteen shots on the goal, and Matthiessen had ten saves, her highest total of the year. The loss also snapped the Mocs ten game home-unbeaten streak that dates from last season.
On a brighter note for the Mocs, Jallo has been named to the National Team of the week for the week of Sept. 6-12 for her play against the University of Alabama in the latest issue of Soccer America.
She has led the Mocs to a 4-2 Southern Conference record and an 8-3 overall record, with her ten goals and five assists.
UTC is averaging four scores per game and has the second ranked scoring offense in the nation. Jallo is the first ever Lady Moc to be named to the National Team.
