This weekend the Mocs play their first Southern Conference rival of the season, the Georgia Southern Eagles. Georgia Southern is 2-1 and coming off of a win against Wofford. The Mocs are still looking for their first victory.
There is some grumbling among Mocs fans about the 0-2 start to the season but UTC head coach Rodney Allison remains optimistic.
"We'll keep on and we'll eventually get better," said Allison. "We make improvements every week."
The Mocs will have to improve greatly to beat Georgia Southern, who are ranked number three in the nation among I-AA schools.
The Mocs have only won one of the 17 meetings between the two teams with the Eagles winning the last seven in a row. Allison still expresses confidence in the Moc's game plan.
"We've got to get better obviously but I don't think we've reached the point yet where we have to change what we're doing wholesale," said Allison.
Allison is still concerned with establishing the running game, which has not yet performed to his expectations.
"The running-back situation is still trying to sort itself out," said Allison.
However, the biggest key to winning more games this season according to Allison, is for the Mocs to not give away so many big plays.
"We've got to eliminate those big mistakes, we can't eliminate all mistakes, but we can minimize them," said Allison.
Last weekend the Mocs made a lot of big mistakes and were embarrassed by the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, losing by a score of 65-20.
After the game, Allison did not mince words about the Mocs' performance.
"We took many steps backward, we got embarrassed," said Allison. "This is the worst I've ever felt as a coach."
Allison said that the failure on offense could not be attributed to any one thing.
Last week Allison stressed the importance of establishing the running game, which never really got moving as the Mocs only amassed 84 rushing yards.
