Student loan debt is on the rise and financial service companies are worried about the effects this could have on the economy. The average loan debt for a graduating UTC undergraduate is $21, 812, and the national average cumulative loan debt is $24, 615, Julae Grosz, associate director of the office of student financial aid, said.

Library adds to electronic resource collection
Lupton Library has added more electronic resources to allow students more access to information through new databases and collections. The added items are the "Nature Group Publications," "Drama Online" and "E-Books, Project Muse," Theresa Liedtka, dean of Lupton Library, said.

Adjuncts increase along with students
Adjunct faculty currently teach about 25 percent of all courses at UTC, Dr. Herbert Burhenn, dean of the college of arts and sciences, said. Though the number of adjuncts rose during the late 2000s, according to an article in the Chattanooga Times-Free Press, part-time faculty make up roughly the same percentage of professors as they did 10-15 years ago, Burhenn said.

Student evaluations, rating websites prove helpful
Students said professor rating websites such as ratemyprofessor.com have become a vital part of decision-making when it comes to selecting classes. And, although professors say they find the University's online professor rating survey to be more helpful, these evaluations are not available to students.

Officials say low graduation rate not uncommon
UTC welcomed 11,438 students this fall, but the graduation rate, studied at a six-year time span, is only at 40 percent, according to the University website. Dr. Dee Dee Anderson, associate vice chancellor of student development, said over the past five to six years when she started working here, the student population was a little over 8,000.

Police look for leads in vandalism
Police are searching for leads in the vandalism of the theater in the Fine Arts Center, which is suspected to have occurred sometime between Feb. 3 through Feb. 5. According to the police report, the vandals broke a large tent outside of the building.

Proposed buildings receive funding help
University advancement and planning officials are looking to aggregate funds over the next three years to match state funding for capital construction projects. As part of a plan composed by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, state officials are asking school administrators to match a percentage of funding for future construction projects.

Confidential employee files found at top of Cardiac Hill
Several boxes containing confidential personnel information were found alongside a garbage can at the top of Cardiac Hill last week. Case Duckworth, a senior from Sevierville, Tenn., said he found the boxes placed with the trash and, upon investigation, saw that there was confidential information contained in the boxes.

Aquatics staff plans new events
The ARC's staff is looking to revitalize Aquatic Center attendance through new programs and small additions to the facility. Anna Forkum, coordinator of aquatic programming, said she is excited about the future of the facility. "It's been great so far," Forkum said.

As you walk along, something shimmering in the sun grabs your attention. You look down and pick up the shiny new penny, observe that it is not heads and promptly toss it back for the next passerby. There is a reason that penny was on the ground,and that is because it is worthless and should no longer be in existence.

Mocs shutout regular season
The Mocs wrestling team finished out its regular season by pitching a 41-0 shutout against VMI Monday night. Nick Soto, a Spring Hill, Fla. freshman, scored the lone pin for the Mocs on the day but was one of ten Mocs to score victories over the Keydets.

Lady Mocs take two road losses
Chattanooga traveled to Atlanta for the Georgia State Panther Invitational Feb. 18 and 19 but dropped two of three games on the weekend. The Lady Mocs topped IUPUI 13-5 in the first game of the tournament before falling 5-1 to Georgia State and 5-4 to Eastern Illinois.
